Mahavir Jayanti: Celebrating the Messenger of Non-Violence and Truth

Mahavir Jayanti, one of the most sacred festivals in Jainism, marks the birth anniversary of Lord Mahavir on April 10 every year, the 24th Tirthankara (spiritual teacher) of Jainism. This auspicious day is observed with great reverence by Jains across the world, as they celebrate the life and teachings of a spiritual leader who championed non-violence (Ahimsa), truth (Satya) and compassion.

Lord Mahavir was born in 599 BCE in Kundagrama (present-day Bihar, India) to King Siddhartha and Queen Trishala of the Ikshvaku dynasty. His birth was believed to be a divine event, and Queen Trishala is said to have seen 14 auspicious dreams before his birth, signifying that he would become a great spiritual leader.

Although born into royalty, Mahavir renounced his luxurious life at the age of 30 to seek the true meaning of existence. He embarked on a 12-year-long journey of intense meditation, self-discipline and penance, attaining Kevala Jnana (Supreme Knowledge) at the age of 42. He then spent the rest of his life spreading the principles of Jainism.

Lord Mahavir’s teachings revolve around self-discipline, non-violence and spiritual liberation. He propagated the Five Vows (Mahavratas), which form the foundation of Jain philosophy:

  1. Ahimsa (Non-Violence) – Not causing harm to any living being, including animals and plants.
  2. Satya (Truthfulness) – Speaking and living in accordance with truth.
  3. Asteya (Non-Stealing) – Not taking anything that is not given.
  4. Brahmacharya (Celibacy or Chastity) – Practicing self-control over desires.
  5. Aparigraha (Non-Possessiveness) – Detachment from material possessions and worldly desires.

These principles continue to guide millions in leading a life of peace, simplicity and compassion.

Mahavir Jayanti is observed with great devotion and enthusiasm. The celebrations include:

  • Prabhat Pheri (Morning Processions): Devotees sing hymns and take out processions with Lord Mahavir’s idol on a chariot, accompanied by spiritual chants.
  • Temple Rituals: Jain temples are beautifully decorated, and devotees offer flowers, rice, and sweets to the idol of Lord Mahavir. Special prayers and sermons are conducted.
  • Charity and Donations: Jains engage in acts of kindness, such as distributing food, clothing, and medical aid to the needy.
  • Lectures on Jainism: Spiritual leaders and scholars conduct discourses on Mahavir’s life and the relevance of his teachings in today’s world.
  • Ahimsa and Vegetarianism: Many people pledge to follow non-violence and adopt a vegetarian lifestyle as a tribute to Mahavir’s philosophy.

Lord Mahavir’s teachings on non-violence, truth and simplicity hold profound significance in today’s world, where conflicts, materialism and intolerance are prevalent. His message encourages:

  • Compassion towards all living beings
  • Environmental consciousness through a minimalistic and sustainable lifestyle
  • Ethical living based on truth and self-discipline
  • Global peace through the principles of Ahimsa (non-violence)

Mahavir Jayanti is not just a religious festival but a reminder of the timeless values that Lord Mahavir taught. His path of non-violence, righteousness and detachment continues to inspire millions around the world.

As we celebrate this sacred day, let us embrace his teachings and strive to create a more peaceful, compassionate and truthful world.Happy Mahavir Jayanti!
