Shivamogga: The Gateway to the Western Ghats

The city’s name is believed to have originated from the words ‘Shiva-Mukha’, meaning ‘Face of Lord Shiva’, or ‘Sihi-Moge’, meaning ‘Sweet Pot’, referring to the region’s fertility. During the rule of the Keladi Nayakas, Shivamogga flourished as an important center for trade, culture and administration.
